Welcome to Bar. Sheshrao Wankhede Mahavidyalaya, Mohpa

Bar. Sheshrao Wankhede Mahavidyalaya, Mohpa was established in 1991 to open the gates of higher education to the rural folks residing in and around Mohpa. The college is affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur and offers courses such as Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Master of Arts (M.A.) in Marathi and Sociology. The college is located at Mohpa in Kalameshwar tehsil of Nagpur district in Maharashtra.

Historical Significance of Mohpa

Mohpa is a small place with a population of around 7000. The place was remote and cut off from the main roads. Freedom fighters would use it as a hiding place to get underground from the British rulers. There is a Bhavani Mata Mandir here– perhaps the only temple in India where no one can enter the sanctum sanctorum until prayers are offered by a Dalit. Shri Kisan Faguji Bansod— the first Dalit journalist, publisher and Press owner who was one of the mentors of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar— also hailed from Mohpa. The place is also renowned for having the biggest oxen market in Vidarbha.

Brief History of the Governing Body

Mohpa Education Society was founded in 1911 on the auspicious day on Vasant Panchami – birthday of Goddess Saraswati, according to Hindu scriptures, with just 05 students. It is the oldest education society in Nagpur district. Late Mr. Krishnarao Wankhede was the founder President of Mohpa Education Society. There were 10 other devoted gentlemen who worked with him and opened a school called New English High School. Bar. Sheshrao Wankhede – a statesman and visionary par excellence – took over the reins from his father in 1945 and continued in office till his last breath in 1988. It was during his tenure that the society opened some other educational institutions and also sowed seeds of a degree college. Mrs. Kunda Vijayakar is taking forward her father’s work now from the President’s office. She is ably supported by Mr. Yashwant K. alias Babasaheb Lande as the Secretary. Presently Mohpa Education Society runs 1 convent (up to Std. VII), 3 high schools, 1 junior college, 1 agricultural polytechnic besides our Bar. Sheshrao Wankhede Mahavidyalaya and caters to the educational requirements of 3000+ students.
